Christmas Making : Festive projects

We love to create our own handmade decoration and gifts for the festive season. These are some projects that we have enjoyed making for over the years - toadstools, knitted stars, Christmas baubles, tea cosy and more!

Christmas making 2019

Pattern : SIA - Knitted Christmas Star by Arne & Carlos
Yarn : WATG Glitterball Sock Yarn in Disco Ball Grey (help double)
Needle : 3mm DPNS
Love the result and can't wait to get our tree and place it on top. However, it was a challenging knit especially pulling the points together and staying focused for the decreases. I used Judy Becker's Magic Cast on for toe-up socks. I love this cast on.

Pattern Wooly Mushroom by Tuija Sulisalo
Yarn : Oddments of Bulky 12ply wool. Patons Jet 12ply in Port, Cream and Mocha
Needle : 5mm DPNS
Again I used Judy Becker's Magic Cast on. The pattern is designed to be knitted in the round from the bottom up. It was challenging to get the additional cast on stitches for the cap to be right way round and not upside down - lot's of trial and error. Great for mastering seamless knitting.

Pattern Christmas Toadstools by Merrin Curley
Yarn : Oddments of Bulky 12ply wool. Patons Jet 12ply in Port, Cream and Mocha
Needle : 3.25mm DPNS
Again I used Judy Becker's Magic Cast on. A great pattern to practice knitting in the round with increases and decreases. Enjoyed using up oddments of yarn in purples, maroons, browns and creams.

Favourite festive projects from 2018

Knit Baubles : 55 Christmas Balls to Knit by Arne & Carlos. They have a well written & charted basic pattern followed by 55 charted designs. Arne & Carlos have designed 24 advent baubles available for free here.
Yarn : Cleckheaton Superfine Merino or Bellissimo extrafine merino 8ply in Red & Cream
Needles : 3.5mm DPNS
I tried circulars but found this really suits DPNs with pattern repeat sitting perfectly on 4 needles.

Crochet baubles : Perfect your increases and decreases with these crochet baubles. Emily Bolduan has a great pdf pattern and Purl Soho have a super step by step tutorial with photos.
Yarn : Patons Cotton Regal in cream with simple stripes in black and red.
Hook : 2.5-3.5mm hook depending on your tension.

Dishcloth : Christmas Star Dishcloths by Maggie Weldon
Yarn : Fibra Natura Cottonwood
Hook : 4mm
A quick project that can be easily coordinated with your own decor. I changed the edging for a simple aesthetic.

Tea Cosy :  Christmas Tree Tea Cosy by Sue Stratford.
Yarn : Cleckheaton Country 8ply in green 2346, oddments of red and yellow from my stash.
Needles : 4mm
Not for the faint hearted! The knitting was fun and quick with short rows for interest. However, with each piece I knitted the thought of sewing it together grew more ominous. There is no way to disguise how time consuming it was to finish this project. Lining up the leaves and spacing them correctly was super fiddly. But the end result is very fun.

Baby booties : Garter Stitch Baby Booties by Heather Lodinsky
Yarn :  WOOLganic DK in Chilli Pepper with Patons Dreamtime 8ply in cream for the pompom
How much : 1 X 50g ball
Needle : 4mm
